John & Mair Vincent discovered Lubrin more than 12 years ago and were fortunate to buy an abandoned Cortijo (farmhouse) on 2 acres of land on the outskirts of the village. Over the next 5 years the Cortijo was sympathetically renovated, along with an outbuilding, to provide very comfortable residential accommodation and also 3 rental units. The old water deposit was converted to a swimming pool and the existing centuries old terraces were landscaped around the existing Olive, Almond and Pomegranate trees.
Cortijo Fuente Arriba is now an established summer destination for travellers that are looking for a rural setting with rest and relaxation mixed with a cultural experience of real Spain and availability of local sightseeing ( i.e. if they can manage to put down their glass of Rioja and get up off the lounger!)
In November 2007 John's sister Christine and hubby Ray visited us for the first time. They are both very keen ramblers in the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons back home in Wales. Christine had remarked that she was not up for long lounge in the sun and was looking for a 4 to 6 hour walk!! On their first morning they set off into the surrounding countryside with no more than intuitive sense of direction but they did take their hand held GPS switched to Back Track mode!
Several hours later they arrived back at the Cortijo wearing intense smiles of satisfaction and could hardly wait to report on their experience of being as one with nature. The only other human beings they came across was a shepherd tending his goats and one farmer pruning his Almond trees, following the September harvest, and another checking his Olive trees prior to the December harvesting. The only non natural sounds were the tinkling of the bells of the goats and the grunt of the tractor of the Almond tree farmer. At the end of the 2 week holiday Christine & Ray had left a legacy of several very enjoyable walks that compared very favourably with the established walks back in Wales.
John, being a retired Chartered Land Surveyor, quickly seized on the opportunity to document these walks which can be viewed on the following page. A number of our summer guests showed sufficient interest in the walks to get up at 7am in the cool of the summer mornings to "walk the walk" and a large part of their summer reviews were taking up with the walking potential of the countryside outside Cortijo Fuente Arriba.
John applied to our main summer holiday advertising website, ResponsibleTravel, for a Walking Page which was duly approved and Walk Lubrin ranks quite high in the Self Guided Walking holidays in Andalucia. For independent reviews from walkers please click on logo below.
We hope that you will visit us on one of your walking holiday and we promise to work hard to ensure that you will enjoy your stay at Cortijo Fuente Arriba and also return home with fond memories of the delightful and charming villagers of Lubrin.
